6月15日 [optional seminar]
"The United States as Global Empire V" (Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49)... this will be a conclusion to our recent themes of pastoral vs. industrial, as well as a conclusion to our overall theme of 'empire' as a model for analyzing U.S. culture. I don't expect a large attendance because it's after the graduation, but you are all invited. The seminar will also include professors and graduate students, so I have room for perhaps 10 of you. You will be able to exempt part of the 6月11日 final exam if you contribute to this Pynchon session. In all likelihood this will mean preparing notes and questions for the other participants. The other possibility is giving a 15-20 minute prepared speech at the seminar, which will replace the entire final exam! I can only offer that option to 2 students at maximum.
