Midterm Exam (11/17)

If you missed the class today, 這是 the revised calendar for the course and 這是 the guide for the midterm exam. Please email me so I know which of the class sessions you are attending next week. You can post any questions about the exam here, or email me directly.

The groups from today's class exercise should also post the three writers they would compare to answer one of the exam questions.

I will post the assigned questions for next week's class on Tuesday night after the exam. Otherwise it's a bit too depressing, I think. Oh, and 這是 the piece of the "Eminem" movie that we watched.

The possible match for the midterm exam is:
    Education- Williams, Emerson, Occom

  2. That would probably make a good comparison.

  7. Vincent, Ted, Sharon, and Ken... I'm a bit concerned by that one. I feel that the three are too similar to produce a strong answer. Occam shares Franklin's belief in Enlightenment etc. albeit with a more religious slant. Freneau seems to share most of Franklin's attitudes about Indians, using them as a kind of symbolic resource to make criticisms of mainstream society.

  8. Since I've been shuttered by the power of words of that final Eminem battle for a couple of times, I can provide the censored version of the lyrics (from f**k to *duck LOL!):
    -------------------------------------------------
    Now everybody from the 313
Put your mutha*duckin' hands up and follow me
    Everybody from the 313
    Put your mutha*duckin' hands up
    Look Look

    Now while he stands tough
Notice that this man did not have his hands up
This free world's got you gassed up
Now who's afraid of the big bad wolf
    1, 2, 3 and to the 4
    1 Pac , 2 Pac, 3 Pac, 4
    4 Pac, 3 Pac, 2 Pac, 1
You're Pac, He's Pac, No Pac, None!
This guy ain't no mutha*duckin MC
I know everything he's got to say against me
    I am white
    I am a *duckin bum
I do live in a trailer with my mom
My boy Future is an Uncle Tom
I do got a dumb friend named Cheddar Bob
Who shoots himself in the leg with his own gun
I did get jumped by all 6 of you chumps
And Wink did *duck my girl
I'm still standin here screamin *duck tha free world!!
Don't ever try to judge me dude
You don't know what the *duck i've been through
But i know something about you
You went to Cranbrook that's a private school
What's the matter dawg? You embarrassed?
This guy's a gangsta? His real name is Clarence
And Clarence lives at home with both parents
And Clarence's parents have a real "good marriage"
This guy don't wanna battle he shook
Koz there aint no such thang as HALF WAY CROOKS!!
    He's scared to death
He's scared to look in his *duckin yearbook
    *Duck Cranbrook!

*Duck the beat i go acapella
*Duck a Papa Doc, *duck a clock, *duck a trailer, *duck everybody
*Duck y'all if you doubt me
I'm a piece of *ducking white trash, i say it proudly
    *Duck this battle
    I don't wanna win I'm outtie

  9. Overall, the lyric is trying to display a reversed descrimination on white people because they know nothing about hiphop, rap, and the poor living conditions in Detroit. But, Eminem uses this deficiency to bite back.

  10. Thanks for posting these lyrics, Ted. Who knew that a rap about ducks could be so aggressive?

  11. Hello Aaron,

This is Crystal, and I would like to ask a question. I am wondering if it is ok for me to write the topic about "freedom" for my mid-term? Yet I am not sure if this idea overlaps a little of the topic "liberty" that you've already assigned to us?

  13. Hi Aaron,
I want to ask whether "equality" can be one topic to be discussed in the mid-term exam.

    thanks

  14. Carol... I think that's a good one. I'd email you, but I left my roster at the office and don't know your email, so hopefully you see this.

  16. Hi Aaron,

I would like to ask if it is necessary to provide textual evidence for each writer/topic in the midterm exam.

    Thank you. =)

  17. Sharon,

It would be helpful to provide textual evidence, but given the amount of time you have to write the exam, the amount of evidence to provide can only be very minimal.

  18. Thank you!

    Oh besides,
please allow me to ask another question here:

Is the topic "alienation" possible to discuss about?
(ex. alienation: Winthrop, Freneau, Zitkala Sa)

    Sorry for the disturbance >""<

  19. Aaron,
For tomorrow's midterm exam, will we be given 30 mins "respectively" for each question, or as long as we can finish the three questions within the one and a half hour, we can distribute the time for each question ourselves?

    thanks,

    ReplyDelete
  20. Carol, this is a good question and I'm surprised no one asked it previously.

The answer is, you can manage your own time. I will not stop you every 30 minutes for a new question.
